Healthy Children

Onslow County Schools Health Services would like to help all children stay healthy this school year.

Hand washing is the most important way to prevent the spread of germs.  Please remind your students to wash their hands after using the bathroom, after playing, and before eating.  They should wash their hands for about 15 seconds and dry them well.

Head lice can be passed from head to head contact.  The schools do head checks throughout the year, especially after long breaks.  Remind your student not to share combs, brushes, coats, or hats with the other children.  Children who are found to have head lice will be sent home and may not return until they are checked by the office and found to be free of nits (the eggs of lice)

One of the first signs of disease is a fever.  A student who has a fever of 100 degrees or higher must be kept home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (Tylenol, Motrin, ets).  Students who are vomiting or who have two or more incidents of diarrhea will also be sent home.  If the student is at school, the school will notify you that your student needs to be picked up as soon as possible.  The schools are not able to keep students at the school for extended time when they are sick.

Medications are not allowed at school unless prescribed by a doctor.  This includes over-the-counter medications such as cough drops, Tylenol, sunscreens, antibiotic cream, etc.  If your child needs medication, such at school, the Onslow County Schools medication form must be completed by the parent/guardian and the doctor, the medication must be in a pharmacy labeled container, and must be brought by the parent/guardian to the school office.

Students may not transport medications.
